35 = No regrets

Today the calendar marked my 35th birthday. Almost 40, as many many people reminded me today. The best part of 35 is....

I have no regrets because....

I kissed the boy and am living happily every after.
Most of the weight is gone.
An ironman tattoo is in the works.
and it's DOCTOR Iron Tri-Feist. Thankyouverymuch.

Not bad for the girl who was never fashionable, pudgy, unpopular, forgets to send thank you cards, and, according to many fashion magazines, should not be your friend. And so many of my bloggers have been along for the ride. Thank you for your support. Can't wait to have you along on my next crusade.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to Shawn, who celebrates the anniversary of her 29th birthday today. My birthday is tomorrow. I'm only 364 days older than Shawn so, if we raced today, we'd race in the same age group. This year I upgrade to the superfast women 35-39. Yikes!

To celebrate our b-days, Shawn bought me a gift card to Itunes which allowed me to fill up on my favorite songs from Shakira, Big & Rich, as well as Jimmy Buffett. Thanks Shawn!

I got Shawn....um....nothing. But I did make strawberry and chocolate shortcake for us to eat before we headed over to Bush Gardens on Saturday. It was Shawn's first trip over there to see the park. We went once before for the Gary Allan concert. Here are a few pics from the day take from my blackberry.

Gotta have flamingos in Florida, although, I like roseate spoonbills better.

Mike the Clydesdale surprises me with a kiss.

Tortoises doing what comes naturally on a lazy Saturday.

Looks like the Lemur's had quite the party last night.

to those in the US: say thanks to those who serve

The gratitude campaign:

http://www.gratitudecampaign.org/

These women and men defend our country every day. They are not earning 6 figure income. They server regardless of which party is in office. Let's show them some love. It's not that hard to say thank you.

RR: CMM half marathon

A few weekends ago, I raced the Country Music half marathon. The only reason I raced in Nashville was that Shawn was going for her 13th state in her 50 state marathon quest. She wanted company. She asked me at a weak moment. I agreed. By the way...Shawn is training for her first tri in June. She is too scared to join the list and could use encouragement. :)

Then I found myself in a job that gave me the financial resources to go but no time to train. We'll spare you the self indulgent whining but I can honestly say the last time I ran over 10 miles was the Gasparilla half in February and no runs over 3 miles for March or April. So what was I expecting?....

To race. Maybe it would not be a PR day but I still know how to race, how to experience the discomfort of pushing the pace, and go all out. And given that all my race preparation had gone wrong, I dubbed this the "everything wrong" race. Didn't watch what I ate/drank in Downtown Nashville. Bought a cute new outfit for race day complete with a $5 purple cowboy hat.

And I showed up with my game face. Made a few friends with newbies before the race. Reminded them not to look at their watch when the finish to guarantee a good photo. Plotted my HR strategy. Regardless of pace, keep it below 170 for the first few miles, then push as hard as my mind will let me. I raced hard. Took the usual amount of energy gels, a few extra Lava Salts. Picked up a free tamborine at an aid station. It was so very fun. There were a few mile splits that pushed 10 minute miles but eventually the moderate hills of CMM took their toll. Miles 7-9 felt solid. Good. Maybe 2:20 is possible? Mile 10 was pain. Mile 11 showed me that cramps were a WHEN not IF proposition and mile 12-13.1, well, hurt a lot. With a little help from a 13 year old girl who asked me not to quit, I crossed the line around 2:24.

Then I limped back to the hotel. Along the way I found Karen at the Information Tent to say hi. It had been a long time and it's always great to see her. There was time for a quick shower, snack, and then it was off to cheer Shawn to her 13th marathon Finish!!!!!! This is a well run race with all the course support the promise. My only bad thing is NO TECH T. They give you a white cotton t-shirt. The design is OK but, come on, we're paying big bucks here. Even Disney, the cheapest race organizers I know, give their racers tech t's. OK, I'm done. :)

What an awesome weekend. EXTREMELY fun. Lisa is the best hostess, ever. How many people meet unknown internet "friends" at the airport in a Mustang convertible. On a beautiful sunny day. It only got better from there. I got to ride in the back like a celebrity the entire weekend. OK, there was a little rain but Lisa can show you Nashville like a pro. Rain or shine, we savored every moment. We're planning to go back for no particular reason next year.

In the end, any disappointment with my time is snuffed out by the effort I put out. The competitive spirit is still alive in here, somewhere. Maybe it's time for a mini-comeback.
