Inconceivable

OK, I know I'm supposed to limit my email during lab time to 30 minutes a day but the upcoming Disney half marathon has taken over. Why? I mean, this isn't a new distance. I've run half marathons several times. A finish is almost guaranteed. All these last minute weather and travel details shouldn't throw me a curve.

And they don't.

Something else has.

You see, a very fast runner has been reading my blog. He told me that I could run 2:30 for the half if I do it right. I kinda laughed out loud but deep down inside, I've been hoping for it. Wanting it. Thinking it might be too much to ask for. So, I asked Nancy what she thought. She was thinking I could go 2:3x as well. And now I'm all worked up, as you can tell.

Part of me can't believe that I can. Not this far, this fast, this soon. I've been slow since I re-started this running thing. Really slow. My marathon PR is was 6:34 if that gives you an idea. It's just as hard to think of myself as a faster runner as it is to realize that 182lbs is a thing of the past. I don't know how to let go of that.

I know I can run 12:30 for the first three and 12:00 for the next 6. That puts me at mile 9 around 1:50. Heck, I've run a hard 9 miles in 1:43:12 which is a 11:28/mile pace, without GU or Powerade. It all depends on how much is in the tank for the last 4.1 miles. What's going to happen when I get there? Should I risk 2:45 to dream of 2:3x? Will I blow up in some pukefest on the side of the road with a pulled hamstring? Or will I make 2:30-something?

Maybe if I'm asking these questions, I already know the choice my heart will make.

Let your mind go and your body will follow.

I was just going to say that (the last line that is!). Linae, you never know what race day will bring you. Let all of these thoughts go bye-bye into cyberspace. You got them out (and your lab mates will be glad), and now they can leave you forever.

Believe. And Dream. With those two things, you WILL. Visualize seeing 2:29:xx when you cross that finish line. You can do it!

You want my advice? Show up on race day determined to have your best race possible. Leave everyting on the course but be smart with your pace. Be sure to have enough in the tanks to finish but when it comes time to finish, finish strong. Leave it all out there. Then, if you are capable of a 2:3x then you will have it. If not, you will have your training goal for next season. Does that make sense? Good luck, we'll be pulling for ya.

Whatever you do, run your own race. Run hard but not so hard you don't enjoy it. Save some push for the end.

Have a great race Linae!
